  • 1 ½ cups All-purpose flour
  • ½ cup Granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup Brown sugar packed
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • ¾ cup Unsalted butter 1 ½ sticks, cold and cut into cubes
Apple Filling
  • 4-5 medium Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • ¼ cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
Cake Batter
  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • ½ cup Unsalted butter 1 stick, softened
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 2 Large eggs room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup Milk room temperature

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer (handheld or stand)
  • 9x13 inch baking pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Spatula

Method

Preparation
  1. Combine flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a large bowl to prepare the crumb topping. Cut in cold butter until coarse crumbs form, then refrigerate.
  2. Toss sliced Granny Smith apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice for the apple filling, then set aside.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9x13 inch baking pan by greasing and flouring it. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt for the cake batter.
Making the Cake
  1. Cream softened butter and granulated sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy using an electric mixer. Beat in eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  2. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with milk, mixing until just combined without overmixing.
  3. Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly, then arrange the spiced apple slices over the batter.
  4. Carefully spread the remaining cake batter over the apples, and then sprinkle the chilled crumb topping evenly over the top layer of batter.
Baking and Serving
  1. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean and the topping is golden brown.
  2. Allow the cake to cool in the pan on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

For best results, ensure all cold ingredients like butter and eggs are at room temperature before mixing to achieve a smoother batter and better rise.
