Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Glaze
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon milk optional for thinning glaze

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a donut pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the donut pan, filling each cavity about 2/3 full.
Baking
  1. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  2. Let the donuts cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
Glazing
  1. For the glaze, combine the powdered sugar, maple syrup, and milk in a bowl, stirring until smooth.
  2. Dip the top of each donut in the glaze and let it set before serving.

Notes

Make sure not to overmix the batter to keep donuts light and fluffy. If you don’t have buttermilk, you can make your own by adding 1/2 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to regular milk, letting it sit for 5 minutes before using. Try adding chopped nuts or chocolate chips to the batter for added texture and flavor. For a richer glaze, you can add extra maple syrup or a pinch of vanilla extract.
