Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed Use cold butter for the best results.
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk You can substitute with regular milk if needed.
  • 1 large egg, whisked with 2 tablespoons water or milk

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the cold butter cubes to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour in the buttermilk and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead it a few times to bring it together.
  6. Roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thickness. Then fold into layers 5-6 times.
Serving
  1. Biscuits can be served warm with butter and jam, or alongside your favorite breakfast items like eggs and bacon.
  2. They are also great for making sandwiches, or enjoying with a bowl of soup.

Notes

Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, wrap each biscuit tightly in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer bag. They will last for about a month in the freezer. Use cold butter for the best results, and do not overmix the dough to keep the biscuits tender. Add herbs or cheese for extra flavor.
