Preparation
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
- In another bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and melted butter.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until combined but do not overmix.
Frying
- Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
- Roll the dough into a 1/2-inch thick layer. Use a doughnut cutter or two round cookie cutters to cut out doughnut shapes.
- Carefully place the doughnuts in the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Remove the doughnuts from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
