Preparation
- In a saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Gradually whisk in 1 cup of milk to create a smooth paste.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and continue whisking until the mixture is smooth and simmering, then gradually add the remaining 3 cups of milk.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently, but do not boil. Remove from heat.
- Stir in the vanilla extract and chopped dark chocolate until the chocolate is fully melted and incorporated.
- Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and serve immediately, optionally garnished with whipped cream or marshmallows.
Notes
For an extra festive touch, add a pinch of cinnamon or a drop of peppermint extract.
