  • 6 slices Bread, day-old, cubed
  • 8 Eggs, large
  • 2 cups Milk
  • 1.5 cups Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 0.5 tsp Salt
  • 0.25 tsp Black pepper

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk

Method

Preparation
  1. Cook the ground sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned, then drain any excess fat.
  2. Arrange the cubed bread evenly in the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, then sprinkle the cooked sausage and shredded cheese over the bread.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the sausage, cheese, and bread in the baking dish. Cover the dish and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 4 hours.
Baking
  1. The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and remove the casserole from the refrigerator while the oven heats up.
  2. Bake the uncovered casserole for 45-55 minutes, or until it is set in the center and golden brown on top.
  3. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the sausage. You can also customize with different cheeses or vegetables like spinach or bell peppers. Ensure the casserole sits overnight for best flavor absorption.
