Preparation of Dough
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for a few minutes.
- Add the yeast mixture and egg to the flour mixture, stirring until the dough comes together.
- Knead the dough until smooth, then cover it and let it rise until it doubles in size.
Shaping the Kringle
- Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle.
- Spread the apple pie filling evenly over the dough, leaving some space around the edges.
- Sprinkle cinnamon and vanilla extract on top, if desired.
- Roll the dough tightly from one end to the other, forming a log shape. Pinch the edges to seal and shape it into a circle or an oval.
Baking the Kringle
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Place the shaped Kringle on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Allow it to cool on a wire rack.
Adding the Glaze
- Combine the powdered sugar with a little milk or water to create a glaze.
- Drizzle it over the cooled Kringle before slicing and serving.
Notes
Use cold butter for a flakier pastry. If you want a richer flavor, try using brown sugar instead of granulated sugar. Don’t skip letting the dough rise; this helps create a light and fluffy texture. Experiment with different types of fruit filling for a fun twist.
