Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour Can try a gluten-free blend for dietary needs
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated Sugar Substitute with brown sugar for deeper flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Enhances flavor in the dough
  • 1 cup Butter (cold) Essential for flaky layers
  • 1 packet Active Dry Yeast Ensure it’s fresh for optimal results
  • 1 cup Warm Milk Almond milk works well for a dairy-free version
  • 1 large Egg For an egg-free option, use flaxseed or aquafaba
Filling and Topping Ingredients
  • 1 can Apple Pie Filling Store-bought is acceptable
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon Optional, can use nutmeg for alternative warmth
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Can replace with almond extract for a unique twist
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar Creates a smooth texture ideal for drizzling

Method

Preparation of Dough
  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for a few minutes.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and egg to the flour mixture, stirring until the dough comes together.
  4. Knead the dough until smooth, then cover it and let it rise until it doubles in size.
Shaping the Kringle
  1. Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle.
  2. Spread the apple pie filling evenly over the dough, leaving some space around the edges.
  3. Sprinkle cinnamon and vanilla extract on top, if desired.
  4. Roll the dough tightly from one end to the other, forming a log shape. Pinch the edges to seal and shape it into a circle or an oval.
Baking the Kringle
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place the shaped Kringle on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Allow it to cool on a wire rack.
Adding the Glaze
  1. Combine the powdered sugar with a little milk or water to create a glaze.
  2. Drizzle it over the cooled Kringle before slicing and serving.

Notes

Use cold butter for a flakier pastry. If you want a richer flavor, try using brown sugar instead of granulated sugar. Don’t skip letting the dough rise; this helps create a light and fluffy texture. Experiment with different types of fruit filling for a fun twist.
