  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Make sure butter is softened for easier mixing.
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar Additional powdered sugar for dusting.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts (walnuts or almonds) You can substitute with pecans for a unique flavor.
  • 1/2 cup maraschino cherries, chopped and drained Make sure to drain the cherries to avoid excess moisture.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt If using salted butter, reduce this amount.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually mix in the flour, nuts, chopped cherries, and salt until well combined.
  5. Shape the dough into small balls and place them on an ungreased baking sheet.
Baking
  1. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until lightly golden on the bottom.
  2. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes.
  3. Roll the warm cookies in powdered sugar, then let them cool completely.
  4. Dust with additional powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

These cookies can be packaged as gifts or served on a platter. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze for about three months. For a twist, try using different nuts or adding almond extract.
